When entrepreneur Ashley Ketner-Garren first opened High Hopes Tattoo in 2020, she had a vision of a queer female-led shop that could offer a fresh and inclusive approach to the New York tattoo scene. High Hopes succeeded in this almost immediately, but it became clear that their beaming little corner in Bushwick was bound to become something much more. On December 1st 2024, Ashley announced that High Hopes would be temporarily closing its doors to make a foundational transition.
"After five incredible years of art, connection, and community, I am making the bittersweet decision to close High Hopes Tattoo as you know it. This shop has been a haven for over 75 artists and countless clients who trusted us with their stories and skin. Together we built something truly special - a safe place, a family, and a celebration of creativity and queerness.
But the tattoo industry, like any other, is evolving. Trends are shifting, and the way we create and connect must adapt. This decision isn't just about closing a chapter - it's about writing the next one with intention and innovation.
What's next? Something bold. Something necessary. Something built for the future. With the incredible support of my dear friend and new business partner, Meg Wright, we're reimagining what this space can be.
This isn't goodbye - it's a pivot, a reinvention, and a promise of something bigger and better and as always with females and queers at the center. Stay tuned. You won't want to miss what's coming."
